Daily Living Resources
Introduction
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) vary from individual to individual and so does the healing process. Additionally, needs may vary over time. There are a variety of government and community-based programs that can help individuals with TBI.
Living and care needs may change because of the physical, emotional and/or cognitive problems caused by TBI. For instance, individuals with TBI may not be able to remember things, may get confused or be unable to focus or make decisions. As a result it may be necessary to oversee their safety while cooking, using electrical appliances and answering the door or telephone.
There are several questions to ask when planning the living and care arrangements for an individual with TBI:
Does the individual want to
live and function independently?
Could the individual live independently with support services?
What type and how much help is needed to meet physical and safety
needs?
Should limitations be placed on the individual's access to car
keys, weapons or alcohol?
What type of living situation would meet social, intellectual and
cognitive needs?
How much assistance can family and friends provide?
This section offers daily living resources organized by:
1. Washington State Government
Programs
2. Information and Referral Services
3. Adult Day and Respite Services Western Washington
1. Washington State Government Programs
Washington State Government programs, primarily the responsibility of the Department of Social and Health Services, provide services to children, adults and seniors with chronic illness, developmental disabilities, cognitive impairment, and related functional disabilities.
This section contains contact information and links to many programs and resources available in your community. If you don't have access to a computer in your home, you can use one at any public library.
2. Information and Referral Services
Information and Referral Services are integrated systems designed to link people to needed services, both public and private. Functions can include providing information about community resources and service referral for assistance and caregiver services and screening for possible case management or further assessments. Information annd Referral Services maintain extensive databases of resources that serve the needs of individuals in their community.
Examples of these resources that may benefit individuals with TBI and their family include home and health care options, medical and dental referrals, caregiving resources, information on housing, respite, support groups, adult day centers, transportation options, nutrition programs, and assistance with obtaining prescription medications. Information and literature on a wide variety of topics can also be sent by mail.
You may contact Information and Referral Services by phone or choose to access the listed links to community resource and service guides that are available on the Internet.
3. Adult Day and Respite Care Services
Adult Day Services and Adult Day Health Services provide structured programs for adults with physical, mental or social support needs associated with TBI and other conditions. Programs are based on individualized plans and provide a variety of activities specially designed to meet the person's needs. Activities might include arts and crafts, discussion groups, light exercise and such services as case management, individual counseling, and health monitoring services. Adult Day Centers may also provide respite to family caregivers.
Respite Care provides relief and a break from caregiving to unpaid families or other caregivers. These individuals have the primary, daily responsibility for the care and/or supervision of an adult with a functional disability. Respite care focuses on the needs of caregivers to encourage them to take care of themselves, to prevent burnout, and to allow them time to pursue other activities that are helpful for maintaining a healthy life.
Respite services are provided in home or out of home (in an adult day services center, boarding home or nursing home) on an emergency or planned basis.
The respite provider staff can provide the level of care that the caregiver ordinarily does, such as: companionship, supervision, personal care and nursing services.
When you check out a program, here are some of the things to consider:
General
What are the eligibility requirements?
Does the program have a special focus, or target audience (age,
ethnic or religious)?
Does the program provide evening or weekend services?
What circumstances might force a participant to leave the program?
Staff
Does program staff have special training and/or experience in
brain injury? Is staff trained in ways to help frail and disabled
people stand, walk, and sit?
Does the staff assist with needed toileting, such as reminders,
changing protective pads, wiping body, and changing clothing?
Does the program staff have regular contact with family members or
care providers?
Are there enough staff and volunteers to assist the participants?
How often are each participant's needs reassessed, by whom, and by
what criteria?
Cost
What does the program cost?
What types or payment or reimbursement do they accept?
Are free or sliding scale fee services available?
Is a deposit required? Is it refundable?
Is the program affordable?Safety
What is the level of safety in the facility? Is there proper
lighting? How extensive is the fire system?
Are exits clearly marked and easily accessed?
Are there hand rails, emergency pull-cords, and door alarms?
Is the facility secure? What are their specific security practices
and/or provisions?
Are the kitchens, restrooms, and activity areas clean?
Programs and Services
What services are included in the costs?
What services have to be paid for separately?
What social and recreational programs are provided? Are these
appealing to the person who will be attending the program?
Does the facility provide social services such as counseling and
assistance with housing, finances, and other needs?
What health care services are available?
Will your schedule work with the program's days and hours of
operation, and the program's transportation schedule/services?
Can transportation be arranged if the program cannot provide this
service?
Can the program provide for any special dietary needs?
